Recorded live in 1991, this recording features the late legendary saxist Thomas Chapin on alto sax, percussion and flute, Charles Baldwin on bass and Abe Speller on drums; Baldwin and Speller being the seminal rhythm section of the late avant-guitarist Sonny Sharrock. McCracken is on guitar synth and guitars.
The concept behind this recording by producer and guitarist John McCracken, was to get four top-rate musicians who had never played together in a recording space, hit “record”, and see what happens. The results are a remarkable collection of avant-jazz, funk, rock, and fusion snapshots, often seemingly composed and pre-planned but neither of which is true. All is “in the moment” with no form or structure given to the players.
Blood from a Tone is a testament to the creative force of musicians who understand where they have come from but are open to the unknown, challenging their abilities to think on the fly in an improvisational environment with limitless possibilities.
